Manchester Terrier
Bred in Manchester for the rat pit and rabbit coursing at once, which is why it is a terrier built like a small whippet. Black and tan, always.
Overview
The Manchester Terrier was created in Victorian Manchester by crossing the old black and tan terrier with the Whippet, to produce a dog that could both kill rats in the pit and course rabbit. Both were working class sports and this dog did both.
It comes in a standard and a toy variety, and the black and tan markings are precisely specified, including thumbprints on the front toes.
Temperament
Keen, clever and devoted. Manchesters are affectionate with their own families and reserved with strangers, and they are more sensitive than most terriers.
They have a high prey drive and they are quick, being part sighthound. They are intelligent and trainable and they can be stubborn. They bond closely and dislike being left alone.
Care and grooming
A short glossy coat, a weekly rub down, light shedding. Almost nothing.
Von Willebrand's disease has a DNA test, and juvenile cardiomyopathy occurs in the toy variety. Legg Calve Perthes disease and patellar luxation are also seen. Fifteen to seventeen years is exceptional for any dog.
Living and exercise
An hour a day plus play. They are athletic and they need a secure fence.
They feel the cold with that thin coat and need one in winter. The breed is on the UK vulnerable native breeds list and is uncommon.
