Siberian Husky
Bred by the Chukchi to pull light loads over long distances rather than to haul heavy freight. It runs, and a loose husky keeps running, which is the problem.
Overview
The Siberian Husky was bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull light loads over enormous distances at moderate speed, which is a completely different job from the Malamute's heavy freight hauling. It is lighter, faster and built for endurance.
UK data gives a life expectancy at birth of 9.53 years. It reached wide fame through the 1925 serum run to Nome, where relay teams carried diphtheria antitoxin 674 miles in five and a half days.
Temperament
Friendly, independent and completely unreliable off lead. Huskies like everyone including strangers, which makes them useless as guard dogs, and they are strongly pack oriented.
The two defining problems are escaping and prey drive. Huskies dig under fences, climb over them and run, and they will kill cats and small animals. Recall is effectively non existent. They are also vocal, howling rather than barking, and they are stubborn to train.
Care and grooming
A medium double coat that sheds constantly and catastrophically twice a year. Daily brushing during those weeks, weekly otherwise. It should never be shaved.
Hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, corneal dystrophy and a zinc responsive skin condition occur. They are otherwise a hardy breed with a working gene pool.
Living and exercise
Two hours a day minimum of hard exercise, and running or harness work rather than walks.
A fence sunk deep and topped, and a lead always. They overheat in warm climates. This is one of the most commonly surrendered breeds and the reasons are consistent: escaping, shedding, howling and energy.
