Goat
A browser rather than a grazer: it wants leaves and bark, not lawn. The rectangular pupil gives it a field of view most of the way around its own head.
Overview
Goats browse rather than graze. They want scrub, hedge, bramble and leaves at head height, and a goat put on a flat green field is on the wrong ground, which is the single most common mistake in keeping them. They are also the reason smallholders get into fencing seriously: a goat tests every inch of a boundary and remembers where the weak part was.
One detail matters more than it sounds. Goats need copper in their minerals, and they are not nearly as sensitive to copper as sheep are, which is why goat minerals and sheep minerals are different products and why the two species cannot simply share a lick.
Temperament
Clever, social and endlessly investigative. Goats work out latches, they climb on everything including cars, and they get bored faster than any other animal on this shelf.
They should never be kept singly. A lone goat calls constantly and looks for company, generally by escaping. Wethers make easy companions where you do not want breeding, and a pair is the practical minimum.
Care and grooming
Browse and hay, with a mineral formulated for goats, and grain only where the animal genuinely needs it, because obesity and urinary stones both follow overfeeding.
Hooves need trimming every six to eight weeks, more if the ground is soft. Worms are the constant battle in goats and resistance to wormers is widespread, so treat on evidence such as faecal egg counts rather than on a calendar.
Living and exercise
About 250 square feet each plus browse, and shelter they can get into whenever they choose, because goats hate rain in a way sheep do not.
The fencing is the real work. Stock fence with a taut top line, gates that latch rather than slide, and nothing stacked next to the boundary, since a goat will use a pallet as a staircase within the hour.
