Geckos

The toe pads grip by molecular attraction rather than suction or glue, which is how a gecko holds to glass. Many of them are vocal, which lizards rarely are.

Overview

Gecko covers well over a thousand species and the differences that matter are practical rather than academic: whether it climbs glass, whether it is out during the day, and whether its tail grows back.

Most geckos have adhesive toe pads, but not all. Leopard geckos are terrestrial with claws and movable eyelids, which most geckos lack, and crested geckos climb everything and never regrow a dropped tail while gargoyle geckos do. Buying a gecko means buying one of these, not the category.

Temperament

Generally calm, generally nocturnal, and generally uninterested in company. Most geckos kept as pets tolerate handling rather than seek it, and settle with routine.

Almost all of them drop the tail when grabbed or badly startled, which is a working defence rather than an injury, and the tail keeps moving after it detaches. Males of nearly every species fight, so a single male per enclosure is the rule across the group.

Care and grooming

Live insects for most, dusted with calcium and gut loaded first. The New Caledonian species take a prepared fruit based diet that is complete on its own, which makes them the easiest geckos to feed correctly.

Supplementation is where gecko keeping usually goes wrong. Insects on their own have the wrong calcium to phosphorus ratio, and a gecko fed undusted crickets for months is the standard route into metabolic bone disease regardless of how good the enclosure looks.

Living and exercise

Ten to forty gallons by species, and the shape matters more than the volume: floor space for the ground dwellers, height for the climbers.

UVB depends on the species. Day active geckos need it, and the nocturnal ones do not require it while low level exposure appears to benefit them. Temperature is by species too, and the constant across all of them is a gradient the animal can move along.
