Asian

Built like a Burmese but bred to carry a wider range of colours and patterns. Developed in Britain, and it keeps the Burmese habit of answering back.

Overview

The Asian is a British breed group built on Burmese type in colours and patterns the Burmese standard does not allow. It came out of the same 1981 accidental mating in Britain that produced the Burmilla, between a Burmese and a Chinchilla Persian.

Mechanically it is a Burmese: the same solid, heavy for its size body, the same short satin coat, the same golden eyes. What differs is the colour chart, which is far wider.

Temperament

Burmese in personality too, which means outgoing, talkative and thoroughly involved. Asians follow people around and want to be part of things.

They are more demanding of attention than most cats and they say so. A household that is out all day is a poor fit unless there is a second cat, and even then this is a breed that notices absence.

Care and grooming

A weekly stroke down with a rubber brush is enough for the close lying coat.

Because the breed sits on Burmese foundations, the Burmese inherited conditions are worth asking about: the WNK4 variant that causes episodic low potassium muscle weakness, and the craniofacial defect that affects some Burmese lines. Both are testable.

Living and exercise

Indoors is fine given enough going on, and they are agile climbers who use height.

They are excellent with children and with other pets, and they are one of the better breeds for a busy household precisely because they want to be in the middle of it.
