Chausie

A hybrid of the jungle cat and a domestic, and it shows: long legged, tall eared, built to run. It needs more space and more to do than a house cat.

Overview

The Chausie is a domestic cat with jungle cat in the pedigree, produced by crossing Felis chaus to domestic cats. It is large, long legged and lean, and adults commonly run fifteen to twenty five pounds.

As with any hybrid cat, the wild ancestry brings legal questions that a coat pattern does not. Restrictions on hybrid cats vary by state and by locality, often by generation, and checking local law before buying is a genuine step.

Temperament

Extremely active, extremely intelligent and not a beginner's cat. Chausies are athletic in a way that reshapes a household, jumping heights that ordinary cats do not attempt.

They are loyal and affectionate with their own people and they do not tolerate boredom. They are also strongly social and generally do badly as an only cat, which is unusual for a cat this size.

Care and grooming

The short ticked coat needs a weekly brush.

The digestive tract is worth knowing about: chausies of earlier generations are commonly reported to have shorter intestines and to cope poorly with plant based ingredients, so a high protein, grain free diet suits them better than a standard one. Chronic intestinal problems appear in the breed.

Living and exercise

A serious amount of space and vertical territory, plus daily hard play. A Chausie in a small flat is a bad outcome for both parties.

Ask about generation. Later generation Chausies are manageable domestic cats, and early generation animals are a different proposition with different legal standing.
