Korean Bobtail

A natural bobtail from Korea, where it has lived alongside people for centuries without anyone breeding for it. The tail is a kink or a pom, never long.

Overview

The Korean Bobtail is a landrace bobtail from the Korean peninsula, where short tailed cats have existed for centuries without anyone setting out to produce them. It is only recently being documented as a breed.

Like the Japanese Bobtail it is a natural short tail rather than an engineered one, and the tails vary widely from a pom to a partial length kink.

Temperament

Adaptable, sociable and alert. As a landrace it was shaped by making its own living rather than by a standard, and it carries the confidence and the hunting drive that goes with that.

They are affectionate with their people, generally good with other cats, and moderately vocal. They are active without being extreme.

Care and grooming

A weekly brush, more for the semi longhaired ones and more through the moult.

The wide landrace gene pool means no documented breed specific disorder. Ordinary preventive care is the whole of it, and these are generally robust cats.

Living and exercise

They do well indoors given enough to do and better with safe outdoor access.

Recognition is limited and numbers outside Korea are very small, so anyone looking for one in the West is looking at a long search. Twelve to fifteen years is the usual expectation.
