Boerboel
A South African farm mastiff, bred to hold a farm against whatever came at it. Powerful, confident, and it needs someone who knows what to do with that.
Overview
The Boerboel is a South African farm mastiff, bred by Dutch, German and Huguenot settlers to guard homesteads against whatever arrived, including large predators. At a hundred and fifty to two hundred pounds it is one of the heaviest breeds kept as a pet.
It is a guardian rather than a fighting dog, and the temperament reflects that: confident and watchful rather than aggressive, with a very clear sense of its own territory.
Temperament
Calm, confident and deeply protective. Boerboels are affectionate with their families and genuinely good with children in the household, and they are decisive about strangers.
This is a dog that requires an experienced owner and it is not negotiable. A two hundred pound guardian with poor socialisation and no training is a serious liability, and the breed is banned or restricted in several countries. Anyone considering one should check local law first.
Care and grooming
A short dense coat, a weekly brush, minimal work.
Hip and elbow dysplasia, ectropion and entropion, and vaginal hyperplasia in females all occur. This is a deep chested giant, so bloat is a real risk. Nine to eleven years is the honest expectation.
Living and exercise
An hour a day of moderate exercise plus training, and far less while growing, because a giant breed puppy's joints do not tolerate impact.
Space and secure fencing. They want to be with their family rather than kennelled, and a Boerboel raised in isolation is exactly the dog that gives the breed its reputation.
