Pyrenean Shepherd
The smallest French herding dog, and it worked the flocks that the Great Pyrenees guarded. Wiry, quick, and it did the thinking for both of them.
Overview
The Pyrenean Shepherd is the small herding dog that worked alongside the Great Pyrenees: the big white dog guarded the flock and this one moved it. It is the smallest of the French herding breeds and it is remarkably fast.
It is also one of the longest lived dogs there is, with seventeen to nineteen years a realistic expectation, which is exceptional for any breed.
Temperament
Intense, quick and devoted. Pyrenean Shepherds are affectionate with their own people and genuinely wary of strangers, and they are among the most reactive herding breeds.
They are fast in mind and body, they need constant work, and they can be nervy without heavy early socialisation. They bark, they herd everything, and they are not a beginner's dog despite the small size.
Care and grooming
The long or demi long harsh coat needs brushing every week or two. It is more self maintaining than it looks and cords slightly in some dogs, which is correct.
Hip dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus and epilepsy occur at low rates. The breed is generally very sound, which the lifespan reflects.
Living and exercise
Two hours a day plus serious mental work. They excel at agility and they are among the fastest dogs in the sport for their size.
They suit an experienced active owner and they are a poor fit for a quiet household. The lifespan means this is a two decade commitment.
