Miniature Bull Terrier

The bull terrier at half the height with none of the volume turned down. Same egg shaped head, same triangular eyes, same refusal to drop an idea.

Overview

The Miniature Bull Terrier is the same breed as the Bull Terrier at a smaller size, with the same egg shaped head and the same continuous profile from skull to nose. It was developed alongside the standard in nineteenth century England.

At eighteen to twenty eight pounds it is a compact, dense, surprisingly heavy dog, and it is every bit as strong for its size as its larger relative.

Temperament

Comic, stubborn and relentlessly playful. Miniature Bull Terriers are affectionate with their families and famously clownish, and they stay boisterous for years.

They can be dog aggressive, particularly with the same sex. Like the standard they are prone to obsessive behaviours, tail chasing especially, which in this breed can become a genuine compulsive disorder rather than a habit. Early training and plenty to do reduce it.

Care and grooming

A short flat coat, a weekly rub down. Easy.

Primary lens luxation has a DNA test and is a serious concern in this breed specifically. Deafness occurs, particularly in white dogs, and BAER testing should be routine. Hereditary nephritis and heart defects also occur.

Living and exercise

An hour a day of real exercise plus mental work, because a bored Miniature Bull Terrier develops the compulsions the breed is prone to.

Breed specific legislation affects them in some jurisdictions. Eleven to thirteen years is the expectation.
