Overview

The Standard is the original schnauzer and the other two sizes were bred from it. It is a German farm dog that killed rats, guarded the cart on the way to market and worked as a general purpose farm dog, and it later served as a German military messenger and Red Cross dog.

The name comes from schnauze, meaning muzzle, referring to the distinctive beard.

Temperament

Bright, spirited and territorial. Standard Schnauzers are devoted to their families, wary of strangers, and they are enthusiastic and vocal watchdogs.

They are highly intelligent and they get bored, and a bored Standard Schnauzer invents work. They can be dog reactive and they need consistent training. They are more demanding than the Miniature and less imposing than the Giant, and many owners consider the middle size the best of the three.

Care and grooming

The harsh wiry coat needs brushing twice a week plus hand stripping or clipping every couple of months. The beard needs daily attention because it collects everything. They shed very little.

Hip dysplasia and hereditary cataracts occur, and dilated cardiomyopathy has been identified in the breed. Thirteen to sixteen years is very good for the size.

Living and exercise

An hour and a half a day plus mental work. They excel at obedience, agility and tracking.

They want to be part of the household and they are vocal enough to be a consideration in close housing.
