Overview
The Kurilian Bobtail comes from the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan, where it has lived as a working cat for centuries. It is a substantial, powerfully built cat with a short pom tail, and it is a genuinely accomplished fisher.
That last part is not decoration. Kurilians hunt in water, they are strong swimmers, and cats on the islands have historically taken fish for themselves.
Temperament
Confident, sociable and dog like. Kurilians are affectionate with their families, good with children and other animals, and notably unbothered by things that startle other cats.
They are intelligent, they work at problems, and they are strong jumpers. They are also quiet, communicating mostly in trills rather than meows.
Care and grooming
A weekly comb for the shorthair and twice weekly for the semi longhair, with more through the moult since the coat is dense.
The tail is short by a different mechanism from the Manx and is not associated with the same spinal problems. As a landrace breed with a broad foundation it has no documented breed specific disorder.
Living and exercise
They want space and they want to climb, and they take to a harness better than most cats.
They are one of the longer lived breeds, with fifteen to twenty years a reasonable expectation, and they are among the healthiest cats on this shelf precisely because nobody designed them.
