Nebelung

A longhaired Russian Blue, and the name means creature of mist. Reserved with strangers to the point of vanishing, and devoted to one or two people.

Overview

The Nebelung is a longhaired Russian Blue in everything but registry paperwork. It was developed in the United States in the 1980s from two longhaired blue kittens, and the name comes from the German for creature of the mist.

The coat is semi long, blue, and silver tipped, so it catches light the way the Russian Blue's does but with more depth to it.

Temperament

Reserved, gentle and deeply attached to a small number of people. Nebelungs are shy with strangers and take time to settle, and they dislike disruption and noise.

With their own household they are affectionate and playful, following quietly from room to room. They are quiet cats and they prefer a predictable routine to an eventful one.

Care and grooming

A comb through twice a week. There is a dense undercoat, so it needs proper combing rather than surface brushing, and more attention through the moult.

No widely documented breed specific disorder, though the founding population was small. Russian Blue ancestry generally brings good health and a long life.

Living and exercise

A quiet household with a settled routine. A busy chaotic home is genuinely stressful for this breed rather than merely unsuitable.

They are moderately active and enjoy interactive play with their own person. Thirteen to eighteen years is a realistic expectation and they are among the longer lived cats here.
