Peterbald

Russian and Oriental in build: a long fine cat that may be bare, downy or brush coated, and can change over its life. The toes are webbed and it uses them.

Overview

The Peterbald was created in St Petersburg in 1994 by crossing a Donskoy with an Oriental Shorthair, giving a hairless cat on a long elegant oriental frame. The hairlessness gene is dominant and it is the Donskoy's, not the Sphynx's.

Coats range across five types from completely bare to a full brush, and an individual cat can change type over its life, which no other breed does.

Temperament

Oriental in personality: vocal, affectionate, clever and constantly involved. Peterbalds talk, follow and insist.

They have webbed, unusually dextrous toes and they use their front paws like hands, opening things and picking objects up. They are highly social, get on with children and other animals, and they are poor at being alone.

Care and grooming

Bathing rather than brushing for the barer types, since skin oil accumulates with nothing to absorb it. Ears and nail beds need regular cleaning.

They lose heat fast, they sunburn, and they need a warm house and clothing in cold weather. The oriental ancestry brings the oriental group's concerns, including rdAc progressive retinal atrophy, which is testable.

Living and exercise

Indoors, warm, with company and with height, because the oriental body is athletic even without a coat.

Heated beds and somewhere to burrow are practical necessities rather than luxuries. Twelve to fifteen years is the usual expectation.
