Toyger

Bred deliberately to look like a tiger in miniature, with vertical stripes in place of a tabby's rings. Entirely domestic, and still a work in progress.

Overview

The Toyger was developed from the 1980s with a specific and unusual goal: to produce a domestic cat with vertical tiger stripes rather than the circular rings a normal mackerel tabby produces, and to use that to raise interest in tiger conservation.

There is no tiger in it and no wild blood at all. It was built from Bengals and domestic shorthairs, and the stripe pattern was selected for over generations, which is why it is still a work in progress.

Temperament

Confident, sociable and easy going. Toygers were selected for temperament as deliberately as for pattern, and they are friendly with strangers, children and other animals.

They are intelligent and trainable, walk on a lead readily, and many enjoy water. They are moderately active and moderately vocal, and less demanding than the Bengal they came from.

Care and grooming

A weekly brush for the short striped coat and nothing else.

The Bengal ancestry brings the Bengal's testable conditions, progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has also been reported. The breed is new enough that long term data is thin.

Living and exercise

Climbing structure, interactive play and ideally leash walks. They are athletic without being extreme.

The breed is rare and expensive, and because the pattern is still being selected for, quality varies considerably between breeders. Twelve to fifteen years is the usual expectation.
