Colorpoint Shorthair
A Siamese in point colours the Siamese standard does not admit, red and cream among them. Same build, same voice, same insistence on being in the room.
Overview
The Colorpoint Shorthair is a Siamese in the point colours the Siamese standard does not admit: red, cream, tortie and lynx points, produced by crossing Siamese to red domestic shorthairs and then breeding back to Siamese type.
Some registries treat it as a separate breed and others treat it as a Siamese colour division, which is a registry argument rather than a difference in the cat.
Temperament
Siamese in full. Vocal, demanding, intensely attached and highly intelligent, with all of the personality and all of the volume.
They want to be involved in everything and they say so continuously. They bond hard to one person, they dislike being alone, and they are among the most trainable cats there is.
Care and grooming
A weekly rub down for the short close coat, and very little else.
The oriental type breeds share a set of inherited concerns worth asking about: progressive retinal atrophy in the rdAc form, which has a DNA test, amyloidosis affecting the liver in some lines, and a real tendency to dental disease that wants staying ahead of.
Living and exercise
Company, and plenty of it. Two cats is often the kinder arrangement, and a household that is out all day is a poor fit.
They climb, they investigate, and they will open cupboards. Twelve to sixteen years, and a cat that fills a house well beyond its eight pounds.
