Overview
The Foldex was developed in Quebec by crossing the Scottish Fold with the Exotic Shorthair, producing a round faced cat with folded ears. It is recognised in Canada and little known elsewhere.
Both parent breeds bring a specific inherited problem, and combining them combines the problems rather than diluting them, which is the honest thing to say about this breed.
Temperament
Placid, affectionate and quiet. Foldexes are gentle, undemanding cats that like company and settle easily.
They are good with children and other animals, and they are not athletic or noisy. In temperament they are among the easier cats on this shelf.
Care and grooming
A weekly brush for the shorthair and two or three times weekly for the semi longhair, plus attention to the folded ears, which trap wax and air poorly.
The flat Exotic face brings the tear duct, dental and breathing issues that shape follows, so face cleaning is routine.
Living and exercise
A calm indoor household, and they ask for very little.
The fold is the thing to understand before buying. It comes from the same TRPV4 variant as the Scottish Fold's, and that variant does not only fold the ear, it interferes with cartilage development throughout the skeleton. Any cat carrying it can develop the degenerative joint disease that goes with it.
